How to Not Eat The Entire Pantry (Even When You Want To)

How to Not Eat The Entire Pantry (Even When You Want To)

Have you ever had one of those days where nothing seems to be going right? You are super stressed out about work, your significant other is irritating the *%$& out of you, your house is dirty and looks like a war zone, and you just can’t seem to get out of your “mood”? We’ve all been there. You get home and something seems to beckon your name from the kitchen… The Pantry. You open the door and wonder what’s in there that you can devour. Even though you have the shelves memorized. You’re hoping something will appear, though.  Something wonderful.

Have You Ever Thought “Escaping” Was The Answer?

Have You Ever Thought “Escaping” Was The Answer?

I’ve been thinking lately about the desire to “escape”. You know, the thought you have when life gets tough, change is swirling all around you, worst-case scenarios fill your mind, and you think, if only I could escape to a tropical island for a month and come back to all of these situations resolved. I came across a journal entry I wrote towards the end of my time living in Ecuador.  An entry about this exact topic: I thought my year of volunteering and traveling would be all highs:  all fun, all smiles, all the time.  I believed I would

Banish Your “Love” Affair with the Scale

Banish Your “Love” Affair with the Scale

I remember my obsessive affair with the scale.  Every morning, I would hop on the scale to weigh myself.  And every afternoon, I would weigh myself again after working out. If that number went up even a half a pound, it sent me into a self-induced panic.  Irrational thoughts of an instant ten pound weight gain launched me into a frenzy, and I would force myself to jump on the treadmill. If the number went down at all, it also sent me into a flurry of frenzied thoughts.  When the number was lower, I spiraled down an addictive path of

Satisfaction From Within

I read some staggering statistics yesterday. 50% of commercials aimed at girls spoke about physical attractiveness. Each year, the average adolescent sees over 5,260 advertisements mentioning attractiveness. Four out of five women in the US are dissatisfied with their appearance. This astounded me: 80% of the female population is unhappy with the way they look.  This means that more than ¾ of US women are trying to change something about themselves-striving to lose weight, buying new clothes, wearing more makeup, changing their body, etc-all in order to be satisfied with their appearance. I shockingly thought to myself: when did being pretty, attractive, and

Grasping For Control

Grasping For Control

For so many women, the desire to exert strict control over our weight, body size, and food is all too common. We convince ourselves that reaching that magical number on the scale would allow us to finally have it all together.  Or that eating “perfectly” and adhering to the EXACT meals we plan for the week will enable us to control the external stress we may be feeling. Or that dieting to fit into those skinny jeans creates a sense that other areas of our lives are more manageable. Unfortunately, this sense of control is an illusion. Life is messy,

4 Helpful Hints to Deal with Discomfort

4 Helpful Hints to Deal with Discomfort

Last week’s blog discussed bringing awareness to all of the ways we use food to escape life’s uncomfortable feelings and situations. When we become mindful of how eating to ease stress, boredom, frustration, and anxiety can become a destructive habit in our lives, we are then able to be more open and receptive to learning new ways to deal with the discomfort. By constantly running from all our fears and feelings, we never delve into those emotions to examine and understand what we can learn from them. Remember, we do not grow by constantly running away. Transformation comes when we
