How Do You Actually Accept Your Body?

How Do You Actually Accept Your Body?

We’ve been having a lot of discussion lately in The Normal Eater’s Club around body acceptance.  And some of the ladies have been asking, “but HOW do you actually accept your body?!” We know we’re supposed to work on body acceptance if we want to make peace with ourselves and be sane around food. But the question then becomes…HOW? The first step is beginning to change our beliefs. We live in a society that is body-centric. We are told how to look and what size we need to be to be enough. (And yes, there have been incredible body positive movements

Getting Through That “Body Discomfort” Feeling

Getting Through That “Body Discomfort” Feeling

It continues to amaze me just how many women (and men) struggle with some sort of weight issue, body distress, or eating struggle. I was discussing my business vision with a friend who admitted her own struggles with some of these issues to me: “Feeling uncomfortable in your own skin is a suffocating feeling and very difficult to handle when people look at you and think you’re crazy for thinking that or just don’t understand.” I so resonated with that. I remember feeling so uncomfortable in my body, so unhappy with my weight, and so distressed about my imperfections, that

How Yoga Can Transform Your Relationship With Your Body

How Yoga Can Transform Your Relationship With Your Body

Years ago, the therapist I was seeing recommended I try yoga. “Ugh”, I thought. “Yoga is for hippies”. But I went. I went even though I was wrapped up in thinking about how many calories I would burn during class. I went even though I thought, “this isn’t REAL exercise”.  I went because deep down, I somehow knew it would change my life. I wasn’t quite sure about yoga at first. But something kept me coming back. I remember a teacher’s instructions in one of my first few classes:  “Soften your body, relax your mind. Bring your focus to your

Banish Your “Love” Affair with the Scale

Banish Your “Love” Affair with the Scale

I remember my obsessive affair with the scale.  Every morning, I would hop on the scale to weigh myself.  And every afternoon, I would weigh myself again after working out. If that number went up even a half a pound, it sent me into a self-induced panic.  Irrational thoughts of an instant ten pound weight gain launched me into a frenzy, and I would force myself to jump on the treadmill. If the number went down at all, it also sent me into a flurry of frenzied thoughts.  When the number was lower, I spiraled down an addictive path of

If You Eat What You Want, Will You Get Fat?

If You Eat What You Want, Will You Get Fat?

When you’re obsessed with controlling your food intake, body size, and the number on the scale, the concept of “eating what you want” sounds foreign, frightening, and downright impossible.  We are convinced that if we allow ourselves to freely choose what we want to eat, we will inevitably gain 10, 15, 20 pounds. You think if you eat what you really want, you’ll just get fat! Our thoughts go something like this: If I eat what I want, my clothes will no longer fit. If I allow myself a dessert today, I’ll lose control of my diet. If I don’t carefully

Satisfaction From Within

I read some staggering statistics yesterday. 50% of commercials aimed at girls spoke about physical attractiveness. Each year, the average adolescent sees over 5,260 advertisements mentioning attractiveness. Four out of five women in the US are dissatisfied with their appearance. This astounded me: 80% of the female population is unhappy with the way they look.  This means that more than ¾ of US women are trying to change something about themselves-striving to lose weight, buying new clothes, wearing more makeup, changing their body, etc-all in order to be satisfied with their appearance. I shockingly thought to myself: when did being pretty, attractive, and
