“If I Eat What I Want, Will I Gain Weight?” (If This Is Your Fear, Read On)

“If I Eat What I Want, Will I Gain Weight?” (If This Is Your Fear, Read On)

When you’re obsessed with controlling your food intake, body size, and the number on the scale, the concept of “eating what you want” sounds foreign, frightening, and downright impossible.  Our biggest fear comes to light: “If I eat what I want, will I gain weight?!”. Left to our own devices, we’re convinced that we will inevitably gain 10, 40, 100 pounds.  Our thoughts go something like this: If I eat what I want, my clothes will no longer fit. I can’t allow myself a dessert today, or I’ll lose control of my diet. If I don’t carefully monitor my food intake

How Do You Actually Accept Your Body?

How Do You Actually Accept Your Body?

We’ve been having a lot of discussion lately in The Normal Eater’s Club around body acceptance.  And some of the ladies have been asking, “but HOW do you actually accept your body?!” We know we’re supposed to work on body acceptance if we want to make peace with ourselves and be sane around food. But the question then becomes…HOW? The first step is beginning to change our beliefs. We live in a society that is body-centric. We are told how to look and what size we need to be to be enough. (And yes, there have been incredible body positive movements

Another Year, Another “I’m Going on a Diet”?

When you’ve consumed a thousand holiday treats and feel awful about your body, the lure of “starting over” on January 1st entices us to make that infamous New Year’s resolution:  “I’m going on a diet!” (or your version of dieting…cutting out carbs, eating clean, limiting food groups, etc) Everywhere we turn, there is talk of dieting, losing weight, and promises to swear off junk food for good. Have you ever had one of those days where nothing seems to be going right? You are super stressed out about work, your significant other is irritating the *%$& out of you, your house is dirty and looks like a war zone, and you just can’t seem to get out of your “mood”? We’ve all been there. You get home and something seems to beckon your name from the kitchen… The Pantry. You open the door and wonder what’s in there that you can devour. Even though you have the shelves memorized. You’re hoping something will appear, though.  Something wonderful.

How Yoga Can Transform Your Relationship With Your Body

How Yoga Can Transform Your Relationship With Your Body

Years ago, the therapist I was seeing recommended I try yoga. “Ugh”, I thought. “Yoga is for hippies”. But I went. I went even though I was wrapped up in thinking about how many calories I would burn during class. I went even though I thought, “this isn’t REAL exercise”.  I went because deep down, I somehow knew it would change my life. I wasn’t quite sure about yoga at first. But something kept me coming back. I remember a teacher’s instructions in one of my first few classes:  “Soften your body, relax your mind. Bring your focus to your

Banish Your “Love” Affair with the Scale

Banish Your “Love” Affair with the Scale

I remember my obsessive affair with the scale.  Every morning, I would hop on the scale to weigh myself.  And every afternoon, I would weigh myself again after working out. If that number went up even a half a pound, it sent me into a self-induced panic.  Irrational thoughts of an instant ten pound weight gain launched me into a frenzy, and I would force myself to jump on the treadmill. If the number went down at all, it also sent me into a flurry of frenzied thoughts.  When the number was lower, I spiraled down an addictive path of
