How Do You Actually Accept Your Body?

How Do You Actually Accept Your Body?

We’ve been having a lot of discussion lately in The Normal Eater’s Club around body acceptance.  And some of the ladies have been asking, “but HOW do you actually accept your body?!” We know we’re supposed to work on body acceptance if we want to make peace with ourselves and be sane around food. But the question then becomes…HOW? The first step is beginning to change our beliefs. We live in a society that is body-centric. We are told how to look and what size we need to be to be enough. (And yes, there have been incredible body positive movements

Why I Stopped Looking at my Body in the Mirror Everyday (And Why You Should Too!)

Why I Stopped Looking at my Body in the Mirror Everyday (And Why You Should Too!)

What’s your reaction when you look at yourself in the mirror? I’m guessing it’s not a big smile radiating love for your amazing body, acceptance of all your “flaws” and admiration of all that your body does for you? Instead you’re plagued with the “Ugh, I hate looking at my body in the mirror” thoughts.  Amiright?? (Yes, I’m part mind-reader 🙂 ) I used to simultaneously be obsessed with looking at my body in the mirror while also hating what I saw. For oh-so-many years, I had this crazy morning ritual. I woke up, headed to the bathroom, lifted up my shirt,

Are You Too Critical of Yourself?

Are You Too Critical of Yourself?

This week I was putting the final touches on my flagship program, Healing From Within, and was battling crazy critical thoughts… What if it’s not perfect?  What if there are mistakes?  What if it’s not good enough?  What if it doesn’t help people?  I was scrutinizing each sentence, criticizing each module and second guessing everything I had written. I was about to rip my hair out, so I decided to go for a walk. The distractions of the city pulled me out of my mind, and it dawned on me… Why am I being SO critical of myself and my work? I know

Have You Ever Thought “Escaping” Was The Answer?

Have You Ever Thought “Escaping” Was The Answer?

I’ve been thinking lately about the desire to “escape”. You know, the thought you have when life gets tough, change is swirling all around you, worst-case scenarios fill your mind, and you think, if only I could escape to a tropical island for a month and come back to all of these situations resolved. I came across a journal entry I wrote towards the end of my time living in Ecuador.  An entry about this exact topic: I thought my year of volunteering and traveling would be all highs:  all fun, all smiles, all the time.  I believed I would

Banish Your “Love” Affair with the Scale

Banish Your “Love” Affair with the Scale

I remember my obsessive affair with the scale.  Every morning, I would hop on the scale to weigh myself.  And every afternoon, I would weigh myself again after working out. If that number went up even a half a pound, it sent me into a self-induced panic.  Irrational thoughts of an instant ten pound weight gain launched me into a frenzy, and I would force myself to jump on the treadmill. If the number went down at all, it also sent me into a flurry of frenzied thoughts.  When the number was lower, I spiraled down an addictive path of

Satisfaction From Within

I read some staggering statistics yesterday. 50% of commercials aimed at girls spoke about physical attractiveness. Each year, the average adolescent sees over 5,260 advertisements mentioning attractiveness. Four out of five women in the US are dissatisfied with their appearance. This astounded me: 80% of the female population is unhappy with the way they look.  This means that more than ¾ of US women are trying to change something about themselves-striving to lose weight, buying new clothes, wearing more makeup, changing their body, etc-all in order to be satisfied with their appearance. I shockingly thought to myself: when did being pretty, attractive, and
